Blood is a protein stain — heat and bleach ruin it
Blood stains are protein-based. Heat cooks the protein into the fibre (the same way an egg white sets in a hot pan), turning a removable mark into a permanent brown shadow. Hot water, a hairdryer or steam cleaning a fresh blood mark is the most common way it becomes permanent.
Chlorine bleach is the other ruin: it can strip the stain but permanently bleaches the carpet dye around it, leaving a lighter patch that is far more visible than the original mark. Professional removal uses cold enzymatic treatment that digests the protein without touching the carpet colour.
