Coffee stains are tannin stains
Coffee contains tannins — the same compounds that stain wine glasses and teacups. Left in a carpet, tannins oxidise and set, turning a light brown splash into a dark, permanent-looking mark. The critical window is the first few hours: blot (never rub), keep the area damp, and get it treated before it dries in.
If the spill has already dried — under a desk, behind a sofa, discovered weeks later — it is still usually treatable. Professional tannin treatment plus hot water extraction lifts most dried coffee marks, though we will tell you honestly if a stain has permanently dyed the fibre, for example on undyed wool or cream carpets.
What NOT to do
- Do not rub the spill — rubbing frays the pile and pushes the coffee deeper
- Do not use soap or washing-up liquid — it can set tannin stains permanently
- Do not apply heat (hairdryer, iron) — heat bonds the stain to the fibre
